Welcome to the current incarnation of my weblog. My name is Antonio Ognio. I’m a 31-year-old peruvian/italian software developer living in Lima, Peru. My focus is on web applications. I’ve been using PHP for 8+ years and Django for about a year. I’m always interested in programming since the good old days when I was 10 and enjoyed coding in BASIC in my Commodore 64.
I’m also a passionate advocate of Free/Libre and Opensource software. Don’t get me wrong, I do think proprietary software has a place in the current state of the world but I firmly think the technical and economic advantages of developing software and technology in a free and open environment will show up clearly in the long run.
Since 2000 I’m one of the coordinators of the Peruvian Linux User Group and whenever I get the chance I give talks on FLOSS topics and participate in community events and activities including helping other people in mailing lists.
My current technology interests are mostly centered around cloud computing, web application scalability, handing big sets of data and extracting information and value from social interactions on the web.
I’m a loyal user of the GNOME desktop since the pre-1.0 days and for a couple of years I was part of the official team translating GNOME into spanish. As for OSes and distros I use Ubuntu on my home desktop, laptop and office workstation but also value very highly the work taking place in the Debian project since it’s the basis for many important derivative distributions. I’m also exploring OpenSolaris, OpenBSD and Mac OS X since all of them have very interesting technologies and applications.
I’m also a big rock’n'roll fan. My favorite band is of course Guns N’ Roses as you might have realized from my nickname but i’m more of a follower of Velvet Revolver these days. I play some guitar, bass, keyboards and drums and write songs too.
